ABOUT US
Our Mission
The Concord Chamber Music Society, Inc. (CCMS) seeks to enhance the cultural life of the greater Boston area by presenting affordable concerts of the highest caliber, and through community and educational outreach.
Performances have featured renowned ensembles and artists such as the Juilliard, Borromeo, Muir, Pacifica, Takács, Parker, and Jerusalem Quartets; the Kalichstein-Laredo-Robinson and Hermitage Piano Trios; Triple Helix; violinists Gil Shaham and Glenn Dicterow; and pianists Yefim Bronfman, Menahem Pressler, Jonathan Biss, and Peter Serkin. Concerts also regularly feature our resident ensemble, the Concord Chamber Players, which includes members of the Boston Symphony Orchestra and acclaimed chamber musicians.
CCMS was founded by Boston Symphony Orchestra violinist Wendy Putnam in January of 2000. With our 2024-2025 season, we are celebrating 25 years of extraordinary musical experiences.
Wendy Putnam, Founder and Director
Wendy Putnam has been a violinist in the Boston Symphony Orchestra since 1996. She has collaborated and concertized with many of the world’s most renowned musicians including her BSO colleagues. Distinguished artists have not only recognized Ms. Putnam’s ability as a highly accomplished violinist but also commended her devotion to the arts and humanities.
Ms. Putnam was born in Wisconsin and began her study of the violin there at age 3. She made her first appearance in the concert hall at age 9 when she was invited to perform as soloist with the Green Bay Symphony. At age 16 she enrolled at Louisiana State University, where she completed both her Bachelor’s and Master of Music degrees under the guidance of professor Sally O’Reilly.
In 1991, while completing her Master of Music with Josef Gingold at Indiana University, Putnam was appointed concertmaster of the New Orleans Symphony (now the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra). Her performance of the Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto under Maxim Shostakovich was named best classical performance of the year in 1995 by the Times-Picayune. Her performance of Vieuxtemps’s Violin Concerto No. 5 with Keith Lockhart and the Boston Pops in May 2001 was also greeted with critical acclaim.
In addition to fellowships to many of the world’s most prestigious music festivals, Putnam has been the recipient of awards from numerous organizations including the National Federation of Music Clubs and the Henry B. Cabot Foundation at Tanglewood.
Putnam is an alumna of Harvard Business School where she completed the Program for Leadership Development in February 2021.
Community and Educational Outreach
Community and educational outreach has been a central tenet of the Concord Chamber Music Society’s mission since its founding. CCMS outreach programs bring musical performances to individuals who ordinarily would not have the opportunity to attend a CCMS concert. Enriching the core concert experience for our audiences with lectures and pre-concert performances by gifted young musicians is essential to our philosophy. These programs aim to foster an awareness and appreciation of chamber music in people of all ages.
Community outreach events have featured pre-concert lectures given by acclaimed musicologist Steven Ledbetter and concert artists, as well as pre-concert performances by students from Project STEP and the New England Conservatory.
Educational outreach events have included classroom visits and performances at local elementary schools, string workshops for high school orchestra members, and free public master classes for local musicians and students. Participating artists have included Boston Symphony Orchestra piccoloist Cynthia Meyers, CCMS founder and Director Wendy Putnam, composer Michael Gandolfi, BSO Concertmaster Malcolm Lowe, BSO Principal Violist Steven Ansell, and music educator Sally O’Reilly, Professor of Violin at University of Minnesota in Minneapolis and a Senior Fulbright Lecturer.
